Lundy Takes Points Lead In Controversial Feature
With mid-season looming, all of Varney Motor Speedway's regular racing divisions took to the high banks for a night of racing that will not be forgotten any time soon. The top three, and sometimes four or five, drivers in each class are separated by less than 10 points and at the half-way mark of the season, the cream is ready to separate from the crop. The action in the officials booth after the races was almost as intense as the action on the track during and, most of it centered around the feature race in the Stock 4 division.
Being mid-season, cars lined up for their features in the order that they sit in overall points. The Stock 4 feature saw #51 Clark Hartman on the pole with #09 Britton Lundy along side. At the drop of the green, the two top drivers quickly separated themselves from the multi-car battle for the third spot. Hartman would hold the lead for most of the race with Lundy on the back bumper in second. Nearing the midway point of the race, #9 Tessa Cremasco; who had won both of her qualifying heat races earlier but still started near the middle of the field; was working her way into the top five when something broke on her car relgating her to the infield for the remainder of the race. A tough break for the young driver as she appeared to be one of only a few drivers that could hang with the leaders. The race stayed green for the first half as the leaders approached the back of the pack and proceeded to put the back markers a lap down. This is where the night took a pivotal turn as far as the overall points standings in the Stock 4 division are concerned.
Scrambling to avoid one of the slower cars, Hartman and Lundy tip toed through turn four. Lundy caught Hartman exiting the turn. Fighting an ill handling car, #02 Justin Zettler dropped down the track infront of the leaders. Lundy had a run on Hartman and the two touched on the front straightaway sending Hartman; the race and points leader; spinning to the infield in a cloud of dust as the green flag stayed out and the filed roared by. Lundy, unscathed by the incident took over the race lead.
The first caution of the race came several laps later when, battling for the third position, #7 Charles Embro dove to the inside of #35 Bob Tolton in turn four resulting in a multi-car crash that left Tolton spinning out of the third position and several cars piling into each other. Notably, #75 Scott Mast; another heat race winner earlier in the night; suffered significant front and rear damage that would strand him in the pits for the rest of the race. Embro was able to maneouver through the mess and continue.
The restart saw Totlon relegated to the back but, Embro; who had appeared to be involved in the spin; took the green flag in the third position. Upfront, Lundy; who had enjoyed a near full straightaway lead before the caution had his hands full with all lead lap cars on his bumper for the final five laps. Lundy would infact hold on for his first feature race win of the season with Embro's second place finish under protest. Finshing third was #86 Nick Clarke with #88 Billy Lovell and #38 Sherry Smart rounding out the top five. With the win, Lundy now takes over the Stock 4 points lead with Embro moving into second and Hartman dropping down to third. Qualifying heat races earlier in the evening were won by Cremasco X2, Mast and #12 Jacob Robb.
The Stock 4's were not the only show in town on Saturday night and some other stories continue to develope at Varney Motor Speedway. In the Street Stock division, the Cole/Atkinson streak continues as #93 Bill Cole picked up his sixth feature race win of the season with #99 Jamie Hunt on the back bumper the whole way and finishing second. Cole and #3 Gary Atkinson; who finished third; have won all the features in the Street Stocks so far this year. Qualifying heat races were won by #48 Mike Wilson and Cole.
The battle for the win in the Super Street Stock division was as close as they get until the closing laps when second place #61 Chad Eden spun in turns three and four trying the pass-in-the-grass on race leader #27 Mark Fenton. Fenton cruised on to the win after the restart with #9 Dave Silverthorn Jr. and #83 Scott Way close behind. Earlier in the night heat races were won by #85 Matt Clarke and Silverthorn.
The win streak for #18 Jason McLellan was never in serious jeopardy as the points leader in the T.W. Robarts Photos Late Model division started on the pole and, after a few caution flags and restarts, cruised on to his fifth win in a row and seventh on the season. Running at Varney for the first time this season, #34 Jason Tremble finished second. Qualifying heat races were won by #81 Chris VanDusen and #2 Ed Peterson.
Also leading every lap for the win, #8 Gary McLean held off #12 Justin McLellan and #3 Glen Coulson in the All Pro Modified feature race. Qualifiers earlier were won by G. McLean and #2 Dale McArthur.
