Canada Day Weekend Varney Motor Speedway
Thunder in the Skies and On the Track!

Varney Ontario - July 2 2008

After a rainout of the feature races on June 21st, the drivers, fans and officials of Varney Motor Speedway hoped for sunny skies for the Canada Day Weekend but Mother Nature had her own ideas.

Saturday night, first Stock 4 heat race, saw a collision involving three cars in the second lap which resulted in an ambulance call to the track for the second consecutive week, and an hour delay in getting the races underway again.  Officials made the call at that time to only run one set of heat races as the skies began to darken.
Following the intermission that included kid’s bike races, and a great autograph session put on by the drivers the skies opened, immediately drowning any hopes of feature races for the second week in a row. Heat races for Saturday night logged the following wins.
Limited Late model - Charles Embro #29 of Hanover, Super Street Stock #27 Mark Fenton, Street Stock #99 James Hunt and #9 Dusty Richardson of Fordwich.  Stock 4  #51 Clark Hartman of Waterloo and #9 Tessa Cremasco of Arthur with her first win of the season.  13 HP Mini Trucks Trevor Thompson with a hat trick winning both heat races and the feature race.

Sunday night saw the skies clear after a rainy afternoon, and the night opened with a full grandstand and packed pits as many drivers from area tracks took a chance on the weather to attend the invitational races offered in all classes.  The track also welcomed Spencer Lewis  from Sunset Speedway as a guest announcer to work with Doug Townsend  in the Tower.  Thanks go to Spencer  it was great having you!

The Stock 4 class attracted drivers
from Sauble Speedway, Barrie Speedway, Sunset Speedway and Flamboro Speedway along with a full house of regular Varney drivers.  27 drivers registered for the night and were divided into three sets of heat races. Opening the evening with the rain out feature  from the 28th, the victory went to #51 Clark Hartman followed by #38 John Ince driving for Sherry Smart, and #13 Jason Tolton.
The invitational Stock 4 feature had the front stretch looking like a wrecking yard one lap into the race. One accident involving approximately 11 of the cars in the starting line up of 23 cars, brought out a red light situation while cleanup began. The restart saw 5 less cars in the starting line-up, and a very fast paced exciting feature race again got underway.  #34 Lance Hotchkiss and #19 Dennis Cremasco of Arthur battled for the lead for the remainder of the race with the checker flying for Hotchkiss, followed by Cremasco for second and #38 John Ince for third place.  Heat races went to #13 Jason Tolton (2) of Guelph, #3 Todd Loughran, #34 Hotchkiss, #92 Rick Walt and #19 Cremasco.

With the Street Stock Division having the night off
, the Stock 4 were followed by the Super Streets beginning with the rain out feature for the 28th. #27 Mark Fenton took the checker followed by #83 Scott Way and #81 Christopher Vandusen for third. The invitational saw one of the most exciting races of the season to date with a final checker being shown to #83 Scott Way of Fergus, followed by  #27 Mark Fenton with third place going to #81 Christopher Vandusen of Guelph. Heat races went to Fenton and Vandusen.

The Varney Late Model Invitational welcomed visiting cars from Sauble, Barrie and Flamboro and started with a 14 car field.  A clean, caution free feature race saw #19 Brian Wilson of Rockwood take his third feature win of the season followed by #5X Dan Lawler from Holstein and #96 Monty Kelly of Mitchell. Heat wins went to #69 Allan Ingles, #34 Jason Tremble Lawler and Wilson.

The All Pro Modifieds took the track with a full field for their 4th race night of the season.  #3 Jason McLellan of Mt Forest beat out #8 Gary McLean of Conn for the feature win. Third place went to #2 Dale McArthur of Durham. Heat races went to McArthur and McLellan.
The fans got a double dose of fun with both the famous “Varney Trains” and “Vantastic” both running on the same night.
The trains started the feature with 6 sets of cars but finished with only 3. #13 Steve Schnurr and crew from Owen Sound took the checker followed by the 503 Train of Ryan Morrison of Ayton and the 00 of Kevin Archibald of Durham for third.
The “Vantastic” class hosted their first “couch race” which was great fun! 9 van drivers each had their own couch to push around the track. If a driver lost their own couch they did not hesitate to jump in and steal someone else’s couch to keep in the race. #16 Kaitlyn Archibald of Durham managed to avoid the mayhem and the debris to bring her couch to victory for the checker. She was followed by her dad #00 Kevin Archibald with #18 Mike Morden taking third.

Next weekend plans to be another exciting night of racing as the regular Varney drivers “Race to end breast cancer. There will be a mile track walk beginning at 3:00, head shaving, door prizes as well as a Ribfest Dinner and Kids Bike Races.   Live entertainment and Beer Gardens also open at 3:00.
