2008 Stock Four Rules

NOTE: This class is intended to take a stock four-cylinder production car and install a roll cage and go racing. The interpretation of the rules will be solely up to the judgement of the officials in charge and official’s decisions will be final. Any part of the car not specifically covered must remain as it came off the regular production line. Stock parts are those found in model/year O.E.M. Parts book as used by the average general public. If it isn’t in the rules, then you should check with the officials before you make any changes.
1. BODY STYLE: Open to 4 cylinder cars with no larger than 2500 cc engines. Cars may be front or rear wheel drive. No mid or rear engine cars. Must have stock wheelbase as factory listed for that year/model. Race cars must be complete and presentable in appearance at the beginning of each race.
2. BODY APPEARANCE: Race cars participating in racing events must be complete and presentable in appearance at the beginning of each race event. Body must be straight, sound and stock appearing. The Technical Committee may reject cars that are considered improperly prepared. Cars that are considered unsafe to driver, competitors, staff or fans will be rejected and not allowed on the track. All mouldings, ornaments, door handles, glass, and plastic components must be removed except grill and windshield. No ground effect skirts or functioning hood scoops or functioning cowl induction hoods. The windshield side of the hood may be lifted 1” above the fender to allow excess heat to escape. Original rear wheel arches must be retained. Trunk lid panels, hood panels may have the center portion removed.( A3”section of framing must remain) roof and Inner door panels must be stock, unless four door bars on driver’s side and three door bars on passenger’s side are used (see Roll Cage for details). Stock spoilers only. No aluminium body panels. If door skins or fenders/quarters are replaced with body steel, they must be stock appearing. No shortening or lengthening of cars. Absolutely no bars shall extend outside the body panels including the grill and bumpers with the exception of side scrub rails. Wheels must not extend outside of body or scrub rails.
3. BATTERY: Must be securely anchored inside driver compartment, it must be in a spill proof container. Battery must be mounted no lower than the floor pan. A battery disconnect switch is recommended and should be located behind the race seat in the driver’s window or in the centre of the dash.
4. BRAKES: Stock four-wheel hydraulic brakes in good working condition are compulsory and are subject to test and inspection. Pedal must be in original position. Four-wheel disc brakes are allowed if stock for that make, model and year.
5. BUMPERS: Bumpers are required and must be present and secure at the start of each heat and feature race. Bumpers must be mounted in stock position/height and securely fastened with no sharp edges exposed (no tolerance). Only carriage head bumper bolts allowed. Safety chains recommended. Plastic/rubber bumper covers may be used. Any passenger car bumper may be used. Bumper may be adjusted to fit car and must not exceed the width of the car. No drilling or lightening of bumpers. Open ended bumpers shall have an end cap attached to the bumper and to the body of the car.
6. CARBURETOR/FUEL INJECTION: One factory stock one or two-barrel carburetor or fuel injection set up for that make, year and model of car. Throttle must be equipped with two return springs. Choke parts and linkage may be removed. Must use stock air cleaner with matching filter element, in stock position. No ram air intakes or cowl induction air cleaners. Air horn on air cleaner may be removed with no other modifications to the air cleaner. Cars originally equipped with fuel injection may opt to use a carburetor, intake manifold, air cleaner and mechanical fuel pump or fuel injection, intake manifold and air cleaner from and older model of the same car, if the carburetor and manifold or fuel injection and manifold bolt directly on without the use of adapters. Cars using electronic fuel injection must use stock computer and chip for that make, model, year and engine and will be monitored. Track officials may at their discretion, supply a computer, which will be sealed. Must have an intake manifold vacuum port available for tech.
7. CHASSIS AND SUSPENSION: Stock only with no modifying of parts. No devices to raise or lower car or to soften or stiffen suspension. Springs do not have to be stock for make and model, but must be the same size and spring rate from side to side. no spring rubbers or progressive spring allowed. No sway bar adjustment. Sway bar mounts and links must remain stock. Min. ride height is 5”.driver out. Wheelbase must be within 1/2" from side to side. The upper strut towers should be tied from side to side with a stress bar or be tied to the hoop or cage. The lower control arm mounts should be tied side to side. Maximum camber on right front wheel is 1-3/8" off of level as measured at the bottom and top of the rim. Camber on left front wheel must be within stock adjustment. Stock track width must be maintained. Camber on rear wheels must be within manufacturer’s specifications. To help achieve the maximum right front camber the right front suspension may be modified as follows: One size smaller, grade 8 or better, camber adjustment bolts may be used. The upper strut mount holes may be elongated but the strut tower must not be weakened. The lower control arms must not be modified and must remain stock .
8. DOORS: Must be welded or bolted securely. Doors must not be cut down
.9. DRIVE LINE: Must have steel 360 degree retaining hoops 1/4” by 2” positioned at the front and rear of the drive shaft within 6” of each U-joint. No chain hoops. Drive shaft must be painted white.
10. ENGINE:. Engine and engine components must be stock for make, model and year. No 16 valve will be allowed. No offshore engines or engine parts allowed. Maximum engine size is 2500 cc. No rotary engines allowed. Maximum three valves per cylinder. Cars with 12 valve engines will be handicapped by the Track. Stock cam (duration and lift) for the engine installed. Minimum intake manifold vacuum is 15” when measured at 800 rpm. All cars must have a fitting on the intake manifold/carburetor base with which to measure intake manifold vacuum. No twin cams. No offset keys, adjustable cam sprockets, shimming of camshaft or alterations to camshaft or crankshaft keyways allowed. Stock rockers, lifter and valves for the engine installed. No polishing, grinding, lightening, fitting or matching allowed. Stock intake manifold, exhaust manifold and cylinder head for the engine installed (see Carburetion/Fuel Injection for exception). Maximum overbore .040”. No excessive shaving of cylinder head or block. The shaving of the cylinder head or block with be considered excessive when the compression exceeds 185 PSI (+5 PSI). Engines must be mounted on stock mounts in stock location only. Engines without safety mounts must have a safety chain mounted from engine to frame. After market oil coolers will be permitted when mounted in the engine compartment and fitted with high-pressure lines. If an oil overflow can is used, it must be metal. All nonessential plastic and flammable components must be removed from the engine compartment.
11. ENGINE CLAIM: No engine claim in this class.
12. ENGINE TEAR DOWN: Varney Motor Speedway reserves the right to one free tear down during the current racing season. If engine is found to be illegal, Varney Motor Speedway will get another free tear down later. Only a competing driver of the Stock 4 division of that event has the right to fill out a protest form to have an engine torn-down for the sum of $150.00. The driver putting up the $150.00 must remain at the track until the tear-down has been completed, which must be started within one hour of the completion of the Feature Race. If the engine is found illegal $75.00 will be returned to the person who made the protest and Track management will assess the penalties. If the engine is found legal, $75.00 will go to the driver being protested. Cash must be presented to Track management before the start of the Feature Race. A cam check is not considered to be a tear down. Penalties may include confiscating illegal parts and loss of 100 points and money. Refusal of tear down will result in disqualification and penalties as assessed by Track management.
13. EXHAUST: Must exit under and behind driver and outside sheet metal or out right side door below a raised floor (see Firewalls & Floor). stock manifold only. Max. 2-1/4” O.D. exhaust pipe. single exhaust only. Pipe must be cut flush to the body with no sharp or ragged edges. A Flo Pro FP214 muffler or Dynamax or approved offset muffler with baffles by Tech. committee.
14. FIRE SAFETY/CONTROL: Cars must have a minimum 2 lb fire extinguisher mounted in a secure mounting bracket and within driver’s reach with seat belts fastened. Fire extinguisher must have a gauge and if the extinguisher is older than three years, it must have a recharge slip dated within two years. Stock hood and truck latches must be removed and replaced with quick entry hold-downs. All unnecessary flammables must be removed from the car. No plastic oil pressure lines. Car will not be permitted to race with fuel leaks. All oil leaks are to be dealt with promptly. Race Apparel: A driver’s racing suit with a recommended rating of SFI 3.2A/1 or better is mandatory. Racing suit must be made of Proban or better and have a readable label to prove it. Nomex underwear, socks and balaclava recommended. Gloves are mandatory with a recommended rating of SFI 3.3/1 or better but leather or “Mechanix” gloves will be accepted. Race shoes with a rating of SFI 3.3/5 or better are recommended. No nylon or plastic shoes allowed. A neck collar/helmet support with a rating of SFI 3.3 or better is highly recommended. All race apparel must be in good, clean condition. If Nomex underwear is not used then any garments worn under the race suit should be cotton (no polyester shirts or pants allowed).
15. FIRE WALLS AND FLOOR: Original front and rear fire walls must be maintained. All holes must be covered with minimum 22 gauge sheet metal either welded or riveted in place. Small holes in fire walls may be sealed with high temp flame resistant silicone. No metal screws allowed. The right side floor pan may be raised 10” to allow for installation of exhaust.
16. FRAME: The front and rear frame sections should be joined for added strength. No “X” frame supports.
17. FUEL: Cars may use street legal unleaded gas with no additives allowed. No NOS allowed.
18. FUEL SYSTEM: Stock fuel system for that car make, model and year (see exception in Carb/Fuel Inj.). On cars equipped with a carburetor and mechanical fuel pump, neoprene or steel fuel line must be securely fastened under floor. On cars equipped with an electric fuel pump, the fuel line must be steel or high-pressure neoprene, in good condition and must run inside a protected area or inside a steel conduit. On all cars the fuel line on the pressure side of the fuel pump must be high-pressure neoprene or steel. No copper lines. No plastic or glass fuel filters. Cars with an electric fuel pump must have a kill switch, marked in red, which shuts off power to the fuel pump and a relay which shuts off power to the fuel pump on low oil pressure or loss of ignition.
19. FUEL TANK/CELL: An approved fuel cell with a rating of SFI 28.1 is highly recommended. The fuel tank/cell must be securely mounted in the trunk compartment between the frame rails. If a fuel cell is not used then the fuel tank must be mounted above the stock floor. The fuel cell must be mounted no lower than the rear axel tubes and above the trunk floor. The trunk floor may be adjusted to accommodate the fuel cell but a full trunk floor must be present. Plastic fuel tanks/cells should be encased in a minimum 22 gauge steel box. Hatch back models require a latching accessible fuel compartment/firewall to be constructed of minimum 22 gauge steel to house fuel tank/cell. The trunk/fuel compartment must be a minimum of twice the size of the fuel tank/cell. If a fuel tank is used it must be secured with steel straps and cannot be larger than seven gallons. Fuel tank/cell should have rear hoop bar for protection. Fuel must not leak from fuel tank/cell if car is over turned. Fuel tank/cell cap must seal and vent lines must have a check valve. Fuel cell cap must be tethered to the car. Fuel cell filler neck must be grounded to the car.
20. IGNITION: Stock single point distributor or stock electronic ignition allowed. Stock coils only. Charging and starting systems must be operating. Car must have two ignition kill switches one on either side of the car. Kill switch must be within reach of the safety crew, be painted red and clearly marked ON and OFF.
21. INTERIOR: All flammable material must be removed except driver’s seat and stock dash (dash optional).
22. MIRRORS: one convex mirror (round 2” max) must be on drivers side
23. PAINT AND LETTERING: All cars must be neatly and brightly painted. Numbers assigned by the Track must be clearly legible on both sides of the car and on the roof. The minimum size of the numbers is 24” high and 2” wide on the roof and 15” high and 2” wide on the doors. Numbers to be read from right side in a colour offering distinct contrast to the colour of the car. No foil numbers. No trick numbers. All cars must have their number and class in white (minimum 6” high) on upper right hand corner of the windshield for line-up and identification purposes. All cars must have 3” high white numbers/letters on the lower right side of the windshield indicating the size of the engine within 1 cc (i.e. - 2210 cc).
24. RACE SEAT: An aluminum race seat will be mandatory. Seat must be securely mounted and positioned completely to the left of the centerline of the car. A solid headrest with padding is mandatory and is subject to test. Seats must be mounted to the roll cage.
25. RACING BELTS/HARNESS: Racing belts/harness is mandatory. Minimum 3” four point harness with one lap belt set and two shoulder belts. Five or six point harness including sub belt with SFI 16.1 rating is recommended. Shoulder belts must be securely mounted to the roll cage. If lap or sub belts cannot be securely mounted to the frame, original mounts or cage, then 3” washers must be used on the mounts to prevent pull through. All mount bolts must use self-locking nuts or be double nutted. Mount bolts should be grade 8 or better and should match the hole size of the belt anchor. Ensure that belts are not pinched when mounting them. Belts shall be mounted so that they are clear of sharp edges. Belts shall be mounted so that the belt anchors are in line with the direction of pull. Seat belts must be dated within the past five years (at the start of the race season) and in good condition.
26. RADIATOR: Must be in stock location and include a 1 gallon metal over flow can securely mounted ahead of the engine firewall, and under the hood. Antifreeze not allowed. Rad must fit under hood. Stock rad fans only.
27. REAR END / FINAL DRIVE: Welded stock rear end/final drive allowed. Rear end must be in stock location and stock mounting.
28. SAFETY HELMET: A well fitting Snell M2000 or newer safety helmet in good condition must be worn in all practice and race events and until car is parked in pit area.
29. ROLL CAGE: Full roll cage with minimum three door bars on driver’s side and two door bars on passenger side is mandatory. Each horizontal door bar must attach to a front and a rear upright. A minimum of two uprights are required between each door bar. Main cage must be constructed of minimum 1-3/4” O.D. .095” wall tubing. Door bars and door bar uprights must be a minimum of 1-1/2” O.D. .095” wall tubing. If inner door panel is removed on drivers side then a minimum of four door bars, extending into the door, must be used. If inner door panel is removed on passenger side, then a minimum of three door bars, extending into the door, must be used. Unibody cars must have a 12” X 12” X 3/16” plate under the uprights or the uprights must be attached to the sub frame. A horizontal bar running between the two front uprights at the dash level is mandatory. Unibody cars must have a bar running horizontally between the rear uprights at floor level. A 40” long by 17” high, 16 gauge metal plate between the door bars and body skin on driver’s side is recommended. A center overhead bar running before and after between the halo bar and the main roll bar is recommended. A vertical bar between the halo bar and the centre of the dash level horizontal bar is recommended. If a front or back hoop is used, it must be installed in such a way as to ensure it will not entrap or injure the driver if it moves. Front and rear hoop may not be wider than the frame rails at any point in front of the front wheels or behind the rear wheels. Minimum 3” clearance recommended between drivers helmet and overhead roll bars. All joints must be completely welded (360 degrees) with an electric or mig welder. All main cage joints must have minimum .125” thick gussets. If door bars are less than 1-3/4” O.D. Tubing, then all joints require gussets. No pipe fittings allowed. No heating of tubing to form bends. Scrub rails are not counted as door bars. Roll bars in driver’s area must be padded with foam rubber with a recommended rating of SFI 45.1 or better. All cars must have a cable or chain attached front and rear for towing purposes.
30. SCRUB RAILS: If scrub rails are used they must remain between the front and rear wheel openings, be a maximum 1” thick by 2” wide and welded or bolted to roll cage. Scrub rails must be secured to the car within 6” of each end. When bolting scrub rails to the car either carriage bolts or recessed hex head bolts must be used. Maximum 45 degree cuts on the ends of scrub rails. All hollow scrub rails must have the ends welded closed. All edges of scrub rails must be radius ground.
31. TIRES: D.O.T. Approved radial tires with maximum size of 215R60X15 when 15” tires are used, 215R60X14 when 14” tires are used and 215R60X13 when 13” tires are used. 60,65,70,75, or 80 series tires only. Passenger car tires only. Min. 300 tread wear. No light truck (LT), no snow tires, specialty (ST) or racing (R compound) tires allowed. No recaps. All tires are subject to approval by the technical committee. No tire or tread cutting or shaving allowed. 13” and 14” tires may be mixed, or 14” and 15” tires may be mixed. No chemicals to soften tires allowed. 200 tread wear allowed for invitationals only.
32. TRANSMISSION: Stock O.E.M. automatic or manual transmission for that make. Transmission must bolt in with stock mounts. Automatics must be stock with stock torque converters. Standards must be complete will all gears, with stock factory clutch, pressure plate and flywheel. No lightening of parts allowed. All cars equipped with standard transmissions must have a rubber shield (truck mud flap) attached to the bell housing and it must cover the top 180 degrees of the clutch and flywheel. No transmission coolers in driver’s compartment.
33. WEIGHT: Cars must not have more than 55% of total weight of car on left side wheels including the driver. Minimum weight must be one pound for each cc of engine size (including overbore) with an overall 2000-pound minimum weight. Weight will be measured with the driver in the car. No topping up of fuel after race, prior to weighting. All ballast weights must be painted white and securely bolted with minimum two ½” or better bolts (double nutted or self-locking nuts) and the assigned car number must be clearly marked on the weight. 12 valve handicap: All cars with 3 valves per cylinder must run handicap weight. The handicap is 10% of the engine size (e.g. A car with a 1600 cc engine must run 160 pounds of handicap weight). The handicap weight will be weighed and marked by the track.
34. WHEELS: Right front rim should be reinforced or racing rim. No magnesium, aluminum or homemade rims allowed. Maximum width is 7" as measured from bead to bead. Stock backspace must be maintained regardless of rim used. Each competitor must bring a least one stock rim for the make, model and year of car to the track each race event. All wheel nuts and wheel studs must be in place at the start of each race event. NO WHEEL WEIGHTS ALLOWED. Three wheel rims can be offset 1" from stock in or out.
35. WINDSHIELD AND WINDOWS: All windows must be removed except full front windshield. Windshield must be safety glass or Lexan. If Lexan is used, two safety bars must be installed. Four windshield-retaining clips must be installed on all cars. A solid and secure driver’s window net, in good condition, with quick release and a recommended rating of SFI 37.1 is mandatory.

“The rules and / or specifications set forth herein are designed to provide for the orderly conduct of racing events and to establish minimum acceptable requirements for such events. By making application for a competitor permit, it is deemed that the competitor agrees to become familiar with these regulations and abide by the directions set forth and prescribed
by Varney Motor Speedway. No express or implied warranty of safety shall result from publication of, or compliance with these rules and / or specifications. They are intended as a guide for the conduct of the sport and are in no way a guaranty against injury or death to participants, spectators or others”.
